Two Cents On Property Taxes in Wyoming by 2026 Gubernatorial Candidate Joseph Kibler

My name is Joseph Kibler, and I’m running for Governor of Wyoming in 2026. In this video, I’ll explain why I would veto the current property tax bill in favor of real, lasting reform—not another excuse for government to stick its hands deeper into our pockets.

How Did We Get Here?

Let’s be honest—whether you lean right, left, or just want to be left alone, I think we can all agree:

  • Property taxes are out of control, and something needs to be done.
  • Government spending is like a teenager with their parents’ credit card—reckless, unchecked, and somehow always justified.
  • Yes, we need property taxes for essential services—but we should be replacing that revenue with Wyoming’s real strengths, like energy and tourism.
  • Every time tax reform comes up, politicians drag out the “education, firefighters, roads” argument like a worn-out security blanket. Listen, we all love teachers and firefighters. But don’t act like there’s nothing else to cut. There are thousands of places to trim the fat—and half of them won’t be missed.
And before anyone freaks out, Wyoming is still one of the lowest tax-burdened states in the country—48th in fact. But if we don’t take control of this now, we’ll be climbing that list faster than Californians are moving here.

The Problem with the Current Legislation

This well-intentioned bill —it looks nice for a minute, but the problems are still there. it
  • Doesn’t actually fix the tax burden—it just shifts it around.
  • Leaves the door open for new taxes and future manipulation.
  • Keeps government spending unchecked, ensuring we’ll be fighting this same battle next year. Because let’s be honest: Government isn’t in the business of solving problems—it’s in the business of keeping them around for job security. And I don’t know about you, but I’d like to fire a few of these problems for good.

What Does Real Property Tax Reform Look Like?

It’s simple—which, I know, is shocking coming from government. But here’s how it works:

  • We scrap the broken system and start fresh.
  • Your property taxes are based on what you actually paid for your home, period.
Bought your house 15 years ago for $100,000? You pay taxes on $100,000—forever. Refinance? Your home is revalued because you’ve realized a gain. Sell it? The new owner pays taxes on the new purchase price.
Bought a million-dollar home yesterday? Congrats! You pay taxes on a million dollars. Because let’s be real—if you can afford the house, you can afford the taxes.

This system is:

  • Fair—it protects seniors and hardworking families.
  • Predictable—no more surprise tax hikes.
  • Sustainable—it ensures new buyers pay their fair share without punishing long-time Wyomingites.

And here’s the kicker: Government—local and state—must live within its means. I know, crazy concept. But instead of constantly messing with our emotions and wallets, how about we start cutting waste line-by-line, doge-style, until the budget actually makes sense?
